There is no easy answer to where paprika comes from. While paprika is closely associated with Hungary and Hungarian cuisine, paprika peppers did not arrive in that part of the world until the mid to late 16th century. The origin of all peppers can be traced to South America, where they grew wild and were distributed throughout South and Central America, mostly by birds. Eventually, peppers were cultivated, and native traders travelling through these regions carried them across the Caribbean as cargo in dugout canoes.  

In the food industry, capsaicin oleoresin is utilized as a natural flavoring and coloring agent, adding heat and spiciness to various food products. It is commonly used in the production of hot sauces, salsas, and spicy snacks, providing a consistent level of heat and flavor.

If any of these symptoms occur, discontinue use immediately. It is particularly important to stop using any products containing curcumin and call your local emergency services if you feel any wheezing, shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing or swelling of the lips.

Regular paprika is not necessarily the product of one specific chile but rather, can be a combination of several different peppers that meet the correct heat and color requirements. It usually comes from New Mexico, California, Hungary, or South America.

You'll find that smoked paprika is also available in mild (dulce), semi-hot (agridulce), and hot (picante) varieties, so you can definitely use it as a substitute for hot paprika. Like cayenne pepper powder, it can enhance the flavor and aroma of your dish because of its distinct smoky flavor.

Hot Sauce

You may think of the famous Sriracha as a hot sauce (and it’s definitely used as one), but technically it’s a chili sauce by name on its own label (“Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce”.) It’s not like Tabasco or other dasher-ready hot sauces. It’s thicker, with hints of sugar and garlic. This is a sauce that can fit many chili sauce use cases in recipes.
